'Joy and Duty'
exploring Philippians
We are going to start the year teaching through a book of the Bible
that perhaps more than any other recognises tension - Philippians.
Philippi was the first city in what we now call Europe to receive
the gospel via the apostle Paul (Acts 16) and it quickly produced a
diverse and unified church.
The initial converts included an international business woman, a
young slave girl, and a hardened prison guard. Ten years later Paul
writes to them from the horrors of a prison cell about the joys of
following Jesus, and the deep challenges and threats to their faith,
liberty and lives. He writes with advise about internal arguments
and gives courage in the face of external pressures. More than
anything he writes about joy and unity in both the good times and
the bad.
There will be lots to learn and reflect on for 2012 from this
insightful and thoroughly practical short letter.
I look forward to the journey together.
